2020 Barón de Ley Reserva – Rioja, Spain

Blend/Varietal:

  • Tempranillo, with small percentages of Graciano and Maturana

Tasting Notes:

This wine presents a clean and bright ruby-red color. On the nose, it offers complex aromas of red fruits like cherries and raspberries, intertwined with sweet spices and a subtle balsamic background. The palate reveals a powerful attack, leading to a sensation of soft, supple volume that extends across the palate for a creamy finish. The aftertaste is reminiscent of red berry fruit mingled with hints of wild herbs.

Accolades:

  • 94 PointsDecanter World Wine Awards (Vintage 2020)
  • 92 PointsInternational Wine Challenge (Vintage 2020)

Winemaker’s Notes:

Crafted from grapes sourced from Barón de Ley's vineyards in the Rioja Oriental subregion, primarily from estates in Mendavia and Los Almendros in Ausejo, this Reserva showcases the concentrated, balanced, and drinkable character typical of the area. Following manual harvest and selection, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, aiming for an ideal balance between extraction and aromatic preservation. The wine undergoes a minimum of 20 months aging in American oak casks, followed by bottle aging, allowing it to reach its full expression.

Food Pairing:

This wine pairs excellently with patatas a la riojana, a hearty potatoes and chorizo-based stew traditional to the Rioja region. It also complements Sunday roasts, stews, goose, or turkey.
